This weekend, I ran across what was the latest LEGO Building Stories video which alluded to LEGO Winter Village sub-themes. Wait… what? Yep… I said sub-themes. Blew my mind.
When you watch the video, Master Builders Chris McVeigh, Pierre Normandin, and Antica Bracanov, will take you on a tour that feels like a heart-to-heart about the LEGO Winter Village Collection. While Chris spends time waxing nostalgic about why he’s probably such a big fan of winter village (and why he builds some amazing Christmas ornaments) he also basically says, “We’ve got different Winter Village sub-divisions going on.”
Who knew?
In the video, he calls out 3 sub-divisions:
- Traditional – which includes things like the Toy Shop, Bakery, and Post Office
- Fantasy – like the Gingerbread House, an Elf Clubhouse, and Santa’s Workshop, and
- The things that bridge them – the train and train station.
Are they really LEGO Winter Village Sub-themes?
So listening to the video, it’s an interesting idea…sub-divisions (which I prefer to call sub-themes) within the theme. It’s also not clear that Chris is speaking for LEGO directly. I suspect he’s just sharing the conversation he was having with his fellow Master Builders.
Personally, I don’t necessarily believe the sub-themes need to be connected in that way… or at all!
I easily see the groupings, of course. But I also feel that Christmas is a bit whimsical in nature anyway, so seeing a Gingerbread House next to a Bakery wouldn’t be out of the ordinary.
But honestly, to each his own. We all build winter village with our own visions in mind. If you want to keep your village builds grouped by sub-theme, do that! If you want to mix them up among each other, do that!
Either way, I’m sure your winter village will bring a smile to your face.
