You are probably here because it’s the first of the month (or close enough) and you are looking for information on the next LEGO monthly mini build session, right? Have the LEGO Monthly Mini Build registration problems come to a head for you? You’re not alone.
With numerous issues of people missing out on registrations because of LEGO changing registration dates, just generally not knowing about the program change until too late to register, getting locked out from registering since your child is not quite 6 and/or the reduction to half the available spots overall from the previous program, there are plenty of people who are not happy about the program edits. If you’re like me, you’ve been feeling like it’s a mad rush to get a spot on the day registration opens.
Frustrating, isn’t it?
I agree.
Why I’m Upset with the new LEGO Monthly Mini Build Registration
Your issue may not be the same as mine, but if you’re a parent of a child under 6 years old, you probably noticed the new restriction in online registration. Where the guideline was these events were for children 6-14, LEGO has officially drawn the line and stopped allowing children outside of the age ranges from registering for the event. Once you enter your child’s birthday, you get the following notification:
For those that can’t read it, the error message states:
We apologize, but children ages 3-5 will no longer be allowed to participate in this event even with chaperone supervision due to poor building experience.
We frequent our local store regularly, so we were (or I was) more than a bit upset about not being able to register. When we called to speak to the manager, they weren’t there that day, but the employee we spoke with did encourage us to fib on our daughter’s birthdate so we could sign her up for the event. And fib we did.
However, I’m not one for lying and felt guilty about it. So I cancelled her reservation and went into our local store to hold her a spot for the LEGO Club monthly meeting. (Yes, if you’re reading this now, there should soon be a spot open for Atlanta area builds next month.)
What bothers me about all of this is that LEGO went from a guideline stance to an enforced restriction. While they’re ok with taking our money for the monthly LEGO Club Meeting for a child who doesn’t meet the age requirement, it’s not okay for the same, building-capable child to attend the free event. I won’t sit here and tell you my child is a genius, but she’s pretty hand around bricks, because she’s been building since she was 3. So why should she be excluded because of her age and potential “poor building experience”? Isn’t that my decision to make and as the parent, shouldn’t I be expected to *actually* chaperone my child while they are building?
Maybe I’m making too big of a deal about this. Maybe your issue isn’t one of age. Either way, if you’re frustrated with the new LEGO Monthly Mini Build registration process, you should speak up to LEGO and let them know how you feel.
How to Voice your LEGO Monthly Mini Build Registration Problems & Concerns
LEGO gives a phone number for general inquires about their monthly building events in the confirmation email they send. I’m sure you can also use it to voice your dislikes and suggestions for improving the program: (800) 835-4386. You can also email them at https://wwwsecure.us.lego.com/en-us/service.
I already have… and I’m encouraging you, too.
What do you plan on doing?
