Next Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. day here in the States. Generally, that starts everyone thinking about Black History Month in February. If you’re looking for a project to work on to commemorate the day, or a project for the month, I’ve created a collection of 4 great black history month LEGO builds for you to check out.
Some of these aren’t actually built with LEGO in mind. However, if you use a bit of creativity, there’s no reason why you wouldn’t be able to modify the builds to fit your current brick collection.
1. Black History Month Mosaics
We all know I’m a sucker for mosaics, so I was pretty excited to come across a Martin Luther King Jr. mosaic build, among other LEGO mosaics celebrating historical figures for Black History Month.
These detailed creations are the brain child of Tricia Fuglestad, a K-5 art teacher at Dryden Elementary School in Arlington Heights, IL. She created these amazing murals using the PhotoBricks iOS app and the BlockPosters website, with the goal of having her students assemble the murals with the classes collection of LEGO bricks.
You can read about her first attempt at the class project here. And it was so successful, she brought the lesson back for round 2!

2. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. BrickHeadz
We all know Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is ubiquitous with Black History Month. So I thought it might be fitting to share a selection of BrickHeadz design ideas for this iconic historical figure.
While BrickHeadz aren’t my favorite LEGO builds, these are some truly creative models. Each is slightly different, from the hair to the suit, taking their inspiration from different historical photos.

3. Martin Luther King, Jr. – Red, White & Blue Mosaic
So here we are, back with another mosaic. This one is hosted for download at the Brik company website. Brik provides laptop cases that can be used to personalize your laptop with your own mosaic designs.
The design was created by user showersflowerpot. You should check out their link to see what other mosaics they’ve made for the product.
4. Martin Luther King, Jr. – Color Mosaic
Last but not least, a mosaic, but not in the way you imagine.
This is a math mosaic lesson created by CalfordMath on the TeachersPayTeachers.com website. While this is more of a homework exercise, the finished product lends itself well to being converted into a LEGO mosaic. With a few color replacements and an extension of the design, this could be recreated on 6 16×16 plates.
