Oh so appropriately, on May the 4th, LEGO dropped a press release for the LEGO Star Wars Boost Droid Commander Set. Think LEGO Boost coding + Star Wars fun!
It took me a while to get this out, because this has been a seriously busy month! I went through a new experience working as part of a digital team that launched a brand new television network with live streaming for 9 hours a day… it’s been a new experience for me and fairly consuming in time and energy, but fun. Enough about that, since you’re not here for TV… you’re here for LEGO!
If you’re not familiar with LEGO Boost, you should check out my post on the great set that combines LEGO builds with coding. It appears the original set has been such a hit, LEGO decided to release this themed version that has you building R2-D2; the Gonk Droid; and the Mouse Droid.
LEGO will release this set September 1st with a price tag of $199 US.
Description of LEGO Star Wars Boost Droid Commander
Since LEGO writes the best descriptions, I’m not going to attempt to recreate their work. Here is the description of the set from their press release. It will most likely be the same description they use for the product page:
- The set includes a color & distance sensor, interactive motor, Bluetooth (Move Hub) and 1,177 pieces – enough to build all three lovable R2-D2 robot, Gonk Droid and Mouse Droid, each coming with their own personalities, skills, and authentic Star Wars sounds and music. It will be age graded 8+ and the recommended retail price will be $199,99/€199,99.
- R2-D2 measures over 7” (20cm) high and 5” (14cm) wide. LEGO® Gonk Droid measures over 7” (18cm) high, 3” (9cm) wide and 6” (16cm) long. LEGO Mouse Droid measures over 5” (14cm) high, 3” (9cm) wide and 6” (17cm) long.
- Free LEGO® BOOST Star Wars™ app is available for selected iOS, Android and Fire smart devices. Using the app, young commanders can build the droids, insert the Bluetooth-controlled Move Hub into the droid they want to see solve each of the 40+ missions, and bring it to life using the intuitive drag-and-drop coding environment.
I also read that each of the droids will have missions you can program them to complete.
R2-D2 Missions
R2-D2s missions will consist of:
- Plot a course
- Receive and decode an incoming message
- Party infiltration
- Assisting flying an X-wing
Gonk Droid Missions
The Gonk Droid missions will consist of:
- Arena Training
- Work as a load lifter
- Ready for the fighting pit
- Power droids
Mouse Droid Missions
The Mouse Droid missions will consist of:
- Thrash sweep
- Thrash dump
- Message delivery
- Locate Rebels

My Take on the LEGO Star Wars Boost Droid Commander Set
Personally, I’m over the moon excited about this set. The merging of two of my favorite things: LEGO and coding, is always a hit in my bookThey look like great large-size builds of the droids. As you also have the ability to command them within the app, it makes for tons of playtime… and in this house… exercise for the dog. ;D
