Hey folks! As you can see, some of my posts are missing images and links due to some host issues I experienced recently. I'm working through getting those corrected as quickly as I can. However, if you are looking at a page you'd like me to correct sooner rather than later, drop me a line with the title of the blog post and I will move it up in my list of fixes to make. Thanks for your help!

Normally about this time, I would have made a post regarding our DixieLUG meeting. We meet every two months, so the next meeting would have happened this past weekend. But guess what? DixieLUG exhibits at Maker Faire Atlanta 2016 next weekend!

So, instead of meeting this weekend, just to get together and exhibit the following weekend, we decide to roll our meeting and exhibition into one.

What is Maker Faire?

DixieLUG Exhibits at Maker Faire Next Weekend!

If you’ve never heard of Maker Faire, this is what it’s all about. From the Maker Faire website:

Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth—a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker Movement. It’s a place where people show what they are making, and share what they are learning.

Makers range from tech enthusiasts to crafters to homesteaders to scientists to garage tinkerers. They are of all ages and backgrounds. The aim of Maker Faire is to entertain, inform, connect and grow this community.

Maker Faire originated in 2006 in the San Francisco Bay Area as a project of the editors of Make: magazine. It has since grown into a significant worldwide network of both flagship and independently-produced events…

Maker Faire Atlanta started as a Mini-Maker Faire in 2011 on the campus of Georgia Tech. It grew into a full Maker Faire in 2014 and has been held in downtown Decatur for the past two years.

Details on Maker Faire Atlanta 2016

Now that you know what Maker Faire is all about and what DixieLUG will be doing there, you want to go, don’t you? You can find most of the Faire details below:

When

Maker Faire Atlanta will be held on Saturday, October 1st and Sunday, October 2nd. On Saturday, October 1st, the Faire is open from 10am to 5pm. On Sunday, October 2nd, the Faire is open from 12pm to 5pm.

Where

Maker Faire Atlanta is held in Downtown Decatur.

Parking

If you must drive to the Faire, you’ll find plenty of paid parking nearby.

However, they encourage you to use MARTA if at all possible. There is limited parking, so if you take MARTA, you free up space for those people who can’t.

How to get to Maker Faire using MARTA

  • Take the eastbound MARTA train to the Decatur MARTA station.
  • Take the Swanton Way exit out of the station and do a U-turn.
  • Walk east towards the gazebo and then south on N McDonough Street (heading towards Decatur High School) until you run into the Faire!

Food, Drink, and Restrooms

Since the Faire is in Downtown Decatur, I’m told there are tons of restaurants and shops to visit. There will also be porta-potties convenient to exhibition areas.
