Buying LEGO Sets at Discount Prices

Hey folks! As you can see, some of my posts are missing images and links due to some host issues I experienced recently. I'm working through getting those corrected as quickly as I can. However, if you are looking at a page you'd like me to correct sooner rather than later, drop me a line with the title of the blog post and I will move it up in my list of fixes to make. Thanks for your help!

We’re not rich. We live month to month like most other Americans.

Mr. Family Brick works as an installer for a well known franchise and my pay-the-bills business has always run in “feast or famine” mode. Right now, we’re in the “famine” while I work on redirecting the focus of the company. So you could say money is tight.

However, we spend a large amount of our discretionary income on LEGO. We collect our random pennies here and there, saving them for our next big purchase. Or we buy our sets little by little. We waste $5, $10, $20 dollars on lesser things all the time… we’d prefer to use that money for LEGO.

Which is why you may find the next thing I say a bit interesting…

We buy most of our LEGO directly from The LEGO Store.

I can’t explain it except to say we have this loyalty or a sense of fulfillment when we purchase directly from them. We search for discounts from all other items we buy, but not LEGO. It’s the strangest thing.

So you can imagine the conflict of interest I felt when Mr. Family Brick said…

LEGO-Creator-Mountain-Hut-on-Walmart

“Did you see the LEGO Creator Mountain Hut is on sale at Walmart, Target and Amazon?”

My heart felt a little pang.

I immediately thought What about those double points we got for buying the set at the LEGO store? “ and “I really hate to return a set”.

What I should have been thinking was “Awesome! We’re going to save 25% off a set! “

Clearly, I’ve been conditioned. And I’m just now seeing it! (Tell me I’m not the only one…)

We’ll be a bit more conciencious from here on out about our purchases…keeping an eye on sales and such. If you need to be as well, you can always find out what LEGO sets are on sale and where through BrickSet.com.

How about you? Do you *always* buy from The LEGO Store directly or do you pinch your pennies and stick to sales?

  1. i figure i already save a ton of money by buying from the LEGO store and not the ridiculously marked-up sets from third-party sellers on amazon.

    1. I stay away from those particular sellers on Amazon. Unless they’re gouging on older, retired sets, it just seems shady to me.

In this case, it was an active set with a non-discounted price the same as The LEGO Store and the discount was the same at all 3 stores, so it was a no brainer.
